Insurance Information

Insurance:

Health insurance can be a positive way to ensure that you receive mental health therapy, and can reduce out-of-pocket costs during a 12 month period.  There are two items to keep in mind before deciding to utilize your health insurance for psychotherapy.

  1. Insurance companies require that licensed counselors provide a diagnosis for a mental health disorder in order to facilitate payment for treatment. If you meet the symptoms of a mental health disorder, such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder, it will become a part of your permanent mental health record.  While confidentiality protects you from those outside of the therapy office from knowing your diagnosis, including your employer, this confidentiality does not pertain to  your insurance company. While the diagnosis is not public record, or part of most background checks, your permanent medical record can be viewed by insurance companies.  If you intend to seek either life or health insurance at a later date, it is possible that the insurance company may be able to view your record. If you choose to use health insurance to pay for treatment, you will be required to sign a release of information for the insurance company.  While the health record should not be the only determining factor for you to decide if you will use your health insurance, Thin Line Counseling and Consulting, LLC is determined to provide this transparency of the possibility.
  2. If you choose to utilize your medical insurance for psychotherapy, you will be required to personally pay any amount billed until you have met your deductible.  As health insurance deductibles have continued to climb, make sure that you are aware of any amount that you owe until the deductible is met.  For most insurance companies, use of your health savings account will apply towards your required deductible, and can be a helpful way to meet that requirement without having to pay any out of pocket fees.
